Product Review: Yuni Shower Sheets

The simple joys of a warm, cleansing shower often prove elusive. Circumstances can leave you wishing for just a few minutes of refreshment and relief.

Have you encountered the campground shower that dispenses only icy cold water? Maybe you prefer primitive campsites with no showers at all.

Those who profess aversion to any experience resembling “roughing it” are not immune from shower scarcity.

Trans-continental flights leave many of us craving just a few brief moments of warm, refreshing shower spray. Even on shorter flights, how many layovers these days allow time for a shower search?

Travelers will tell you that sufficient shower facilities can be tough to find. Even when located, adequate time to use them also can be elusive.

For all of these situations, enter Yuni Shower Sheets, described on the carton as “large body wipes” that instantly cleanse, refresh and deodorize.

When I first saw this product, I wondered why pay the price ($15 for a box of 12 sheets) when less expensive products such as baby wipes would do the same thing?

Part of the answer involves the size of the towelette.

The Yuni Shower Sheets are 12″ x 10″, several times larger than an average wipe. This allows for folding and flipping to keep the sheet fresh as it covers an adult-sized body.

Another feature is the fragrance. Few people want to walk around smelling like a baby wipe, which has a distinctive, somewhat overpowering aroma. The fragrance here is neither cologne-like nor perfume-scented,  meaning it should be acceptable for men or women. The anti-bacterial building block used to create the sheets is identified as Neem extract, commonly withdrawn from evergreen trees in India. The sheets are alcohol-free, containing only plant-based aromas such as the aforementioned Neem, as well as Peppermint, and assorted citrus products.

Once you open the carton, you’ll find that each sheet comes wrapped in a foil-insulated package designed to keep the inside product moist for long periods of storage. The sheets are not excessively wet coming out of the foil, but retain enough moisture for a full body wash. Although thin, the sheets hold up well and did not tear during the cleaning process.

The manufacturer describes its product as biodegradable and compostable.

Although the carton in which Shower Sheets are sold is rather bulky for a suitcase, the individual packaging makes it easy to throw a few of these in the outer pocket of a carry-on bag or backpack for use at an opportune time in the trip or for a post-hike refresh. Likewise, they will fit in a glove compartment, camera bag or purse.

“We created Yuni to share healthy solutions from nature that save time, enhance performance and relieve stress,” say company founders Emmanuel Ray and Suzanne Dawson, “so active people who pursue life with passion can find more joy in every moment.”

That might be a bit much to expect from a pre-moistened towelette, but it’s nice to set lofty goals.

Most of the Yuni products developed to meet the needs of yoga participants. But this surprising travel find also offers excellent applications for those of us who want to see the world without offending the senses of those sharing our journey. In my experience, if you travel enough, you’ll eventually run into a situation in which Shower Sheets are a prudent investment.
